Projects

Projects are chosen based on the priorities developed through the Long Range Transportation Plan. These projects may vary from retrofitting intersections to building new roads.  Capital projects are approved by the SUATS Policy Committee and placed on the SUATS capital plan, known as the Transportation Improvement Program, or TIP.  The TIP contains a record of all federally assisted and regionally significant transportation projects in the SUATS area.  The current TIP for SUATS covers the period from Federal Fiscal Year 2024 through 2033.

Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)  (PDF, 2.9 MB)

The TIP is SUATS’ mechanism for prioritizing limited transportation resources among the various needs of the area. It is a 10-year program covering the most immediate needs for transportation projects and strategies from the long-range transportation plan. To be included in the TIP, a project must have funds committed and be included in the SUATS Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The TIP also includes all federally supported capital and non-capital surface transportation projects within the MPO boundaries as well as all projects requiring action by FHWA or FTA. Projects placed on the TIP are expected to be undertaken during the 10-year TIP window. 

 

Corridor Projects

Corridor Projects are the biggest projects undertaken by SUATS, both in terms of cost and scope. Operational improvement, widening, and new location roads are identified and ranked via the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) and are then selected by the Policy Committee for funding via the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

Intersection Projects

Intersection Projects may include complete retrofit to an intersection, or more minor improvements for operational efficiency and safety.  Intersections are identified and ranked via the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) and are then selected by the Policy Committee for funding via the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

Bike and Pedestrian Projects

Bicycle and Pedestrian Projects may include addition of bike lanes and/or sidewalks to existing roadways, off-street greenways, mid-block crossings, and intersection improvements specifically for pedestrian and bicycle access.  Bicycle and Pedestrian projects are identified and ranked via the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) and are then selected by the Policy Committee for funding via the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).  In addition, bicycle and pedestrian projects are included and funded via Sumter’s Penny for Progress sales tax program

Bridge Replacement Projects

Following the 2016 legislative session and passage of the 2017 Roads Bill, SCDOT developed a program to reduce the structurally deficient bridge numbers in our state by 2/3 within a 10 year timeframe.  The establishment of this bridge program is a major first step in addressing the years of deferred maintenance on our critical infrastructure.
