The Sumter Fire Department’s Fire Explorer Program is operated in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America, Pee Dee Area Council, and our own firefighters. It is designed to contribute to the process of becoming a volunteer and or career firefighter. This program enhances knowledge and develops the life skills of youth who are interested in becoming a firefighter and/or EMT.
Sumter Fire Explorers meet two hours weekly. All prospective candidates must complete an application process, which includes a parent or guardian’s written permission for participation in the program. The annual cost of the program is currently funded by the Sumter Fire Department. Personal Protective Equipment utilized during the program is on loan from the Sumter Fire Department and is made available to each student without cost. The Sumter Fire Explorer post competes in competitions during the annual State of South Carolina Fire Conference and other events throughout the year.
Each Fire Explorer is allowed to enroll in selected firefighting courses through the South Carolina Fire Academy, and students can potentially earn college credits with academic IFSAC accreditation. The purpose of the Fire Explorer Program is to provide experiences to help young adults mature and prepare themselves to become responsible and caring adults with fire-rescue training.
Sumter Fire Explorers are put through the same training requirements as professional certified firefighters. Professional training and education courses are delivered by certified South Carolina Fire Academy Instructors.
