Public meetings are scheduled in January 2022 for Sumter County residents to learn about the proposed third round of the Capital Projects Sales Tax.

Known commonly as the ‘Penny For Progress,’ voters twice approved referendums in 2008 and 2014 to add a one-cent sales tax that funds capital improvement projects throughout the county.

Sumter County Administrator Gary Mixon will give attendees a presentation and history of the Penny For Progress 1 and 2, along with the tentative schedule for the proposed third referendum.

“We want people to come out and listen to what your local governments have funded with the Penny For Progress,” he said. “These projects impact the entire community and we’re happy to explain the entire process.”

All meetings are open to the general public and people will be able to fill out a form to request a project. The floor will be open for a Question and Answer portion as well.

There will be a 6 p.m. meeting on Monday, Jan. 10, 2022, at Dubose Fire Station, 3805 U.S. 15 North.

There will also be a 6 p.m. meeting on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022, at Ebenezer Community Center, 4580 Queen Chapel Road, Dalzell.

As a result of the first Penny For Progress, the Patriot Park Sportsplex was built, along with the Sumter County Judicial Center, among quite a few other projects. From the second Penny For Progress, roads were paved or resurfaced, Manning Avenue and North Main Street are getting a makeover and a new Public Safety Complex was built for the Sumter Fire Department and Sumter Police Department, among other projects.
