Boy Scouts Help Kick-off City’s Litter Control Program

SUMTER, S.C. (Sept. 14, 2020) – The City of Sumter is organizing a litter pick up day for Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. until noon on Wall Street in Sumter. The event will include support from Palmetto Pride and the local Boy Scouts of America chapter. “I really want residents as well as businesses and organizations to work together and join this effort to keep Sumter beautiful,” stated Glenn Button, Litter Control Officer for the City of Sumter. "We are starting with Wall Street, as it’s one of our most troublesome areas in the City; however, we will be planning events all around the City in the future." Palmetto Pride will provide supplies such as gloves, trash bags, and vests for the Boy Scout members, who will also be fulfilling some of their community service hours requirement by participating. The public is welcome to participate in this event. Kona Ice will be providing free snow cones for Boy Scout members assisting with the clean-up efforts. The event is part of the City of Sumter’s commitment to addressing litter concerns in the community. Three months ago, Button was hired to coordinate these efforts. “I really want to continue working with our citizens to pick it up, not throw it out,” stated Button. “I see this as a long-term event that brings the community together to achieve this goal.” For more information and to coordinate a cleanup in the City, please contact Button at 803-305-5266 or gbutton@sumtersc.gov.
