Sumter, SC (January 15, 2019) – Downtown Sumter has announced they will be working on a master plan that will help provide a roadmap for the future development of the Central Business District, and they are asking the public for their input.
Scheduled to be completed by the end of summer 2019, the master plan is intended to support the goals and strategic initiatives within Downtown Sumter. The plan will serve as a flexible guide for future development, focusing on downtown’s needs over the next 5 to 10 years.
“To ensure sustainable growth in the right direction, a master plan is essential,” stated Howie Owens Downtown Manager. “Revitalization began in Downtown Sumter in 2000 and with the recent addition of a Hyatt Place Hotel, several new restaurants, and the construction of the Economic Development building, this master plan will help continue that progress.”
TSW Design out of Atlanta, Georgia, has been entrusted with the project. Chosen from more than a dozen firms who submitted proposals, TSW is a full-service planning, architecture, and landscape design firm that works throughout the Southeast on projects, including downtown master plans and corridor studies.
According to TSW, the master plan will create a vision that will leverage the history and recent Downtown success, attract jobs and residents Downtown, recommend infrastructure enhancements, encourage appropriate infill development, and make walking and biking easier.
The planning team wants the entire community involved in the process. They will engage with the community through a variety of ways, including multiple public meetings, a 3-day design workshop, a community survey, and social media posts. The first public kick-off meeting will be held Tuesday, January 29th from 7:00-9:00 PM in the City Centre, located at 25 N. Main Street in Downtown Sumter.
