SUMTER, S.C. (May 11, 2022) – In response to the Sumter area’s growing demand for better walk and bike infrastructure, the Sumter Area Transportation Study Metropolitan Planning Organization (SUATS MPO) is developing a Walk and Bike Master Plan.
“Now more than ever, the need for safe and comfortable outdoor recreation opportunities and accessibility to work, home, and services without a car is apparent,” stated Kyle Kelly, Senior Planner. “The City of Sumter, Sumter County, and SUATS view this plan as an important step in developing all facets of the Sumter area’s bicycle and pedestrian network.”
The development of this master plan was recommended in the region’s 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan and is part of a statewide effort for all areas to develop master plans to address this critical but often underappreciated element of community infrastructure.
The finished Plan will create a guide for expanding the current bicycle and pedestrian network in Sumter. The network will continue to make connections to schools, parks, shopping centers, employment areas, and other key destinations. It will also identify opportunities to expand routes throughout the community that are safe, convenient, and comfortable for users of all skill levels. Finally, the Plan will consider the region’s future growth while contributing to a vibrant community with high-quality lifestyle accommodations.
“Recommendations for bicycle and pedestrian facilities will focus on improving and expanding on our community’s existing network, adding more facilities and locations for all to use and enjoy,” stated Kelly.
Several community engagement opportunities will be available for public input and to stay informed throughout the process.
- An online survey has been launched to obtain feedback from the public about preferences for bike and pedestrian facilities.
- In the coming months, project team members will be out in the community bringing awareness to the study and encouraging participation at local events.
- A citizen steering committee will provide feedback and input to the project team.
- A public open house meeting will be conducted to share the project’s draft recommendations.
