SUMTER, SC (May 26, 2017) â The Sumter Urban Area Transportation Study (SUATS) Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is seeking public comments on the upcoming 2017-2019 Unified Planning Work Program and the updated version of the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), 2014-2019.
The program describes all urban transportation and transportation-related planning activities anticipated for the fiscal period of July 2017 to June 2019. âWe are constantly evaluating economic potential and trying to identify real and potential transportation problems area that may hinder or weaken the economic growth in Sumter,â stated Joe McElveen, Mayor of City of Sumter. âPlanning activities like this seek to help to improve traffic flows, which mean better freight routes to transport goods in and out of Sumter.â
The document discusses many different issues, including public transportation, air transportation, general transportation improvements, and community planning efforts, which initiatives include: identifying bicycle routes, intersection improvements, and additional subdivision regulations, among
many other details.

SUATS MPO is designated for the urbanized areas of Sumter County. The MPO is the planning organization for the expenditure of Federal and State matching highway funds within the designated areas in the County. All transportation projects in the urban area using state or federal funds must be approved by this organization.
