The requirement was approved by the Mayor and City Council to protect patrons, business owners and employees in the City of Sumter. “Businesses in our community are doing all they can to protect their employees and the public,” stated Mayor Joe McElveen. “It is our hope that this measure reinforces these efforts.”
Facial coverings will be required in any foodservice establishment that sells prepared food on a dine-in, delivery, carry-out, or drive through basis, and in any retail establishment that includes grocery stores, convenience stores, commercial stores, pharmacies, alcoholic beverage stores and laundromats. Staff in these establishments shall wear masks during interactions with the public and at all times when social/physical distancing with other staff are not possible.
Facial coverings will not be required in the following circumstances: outdoor areas of these establishments in which social/physical distancing may be observed, for people whose religious beliefs or medical condition prevent the wearing of a facial covering, for children under eight years old, for customers during the consumption of food, in private offices, and during compliance with law enforcement’s directions.
Any customer or employee of these establishments that is found in violation of this requirement shall be subject to a penalty of no more than $50.00. Each day of continuing violation shall be treated as a separate offense.
