SUMTER, SC (August 12, 2019) - Come join us Wednesday morning on the front lawn of the Sumter County Courthouse, 141 North Main Street, as we celebrate the 285th birthday of General Thomas Sumter.
The event will begin at 10 a.m., where City of Sumter Mayor Joe McElveen and Sumter County Council Chairman Jim McCain will speak briefly about General Sumter, and how his life continues to influence our community.
Following the ceremony, participants are encouraged to visit the Sumter County Museum, which houses a room dedicated to understanding the legacy of Thomas Sumter. Noted local historian Dr. Sammy Way and family descendants of General Sumter will speak and share stories about the namesake of our City and County.
Admission to the museum will be free for this event and it will close at 1 p.m.
